# Kedarnath Trek Guide
The trek to the holy shrine of Kedarnath is equal parts challenging and spiritually uplifting. Resting at an altitude of 3,583 meters (11,755 ft), the journey requires adequate preparation.
The Trek Distance
The trek begins at Gaurikund. The total distance is typically cited as 16 km, though with the new steep shortcuts, the physical exhaustion makes it feel longer.
Mode of Transport
You have multiple choices to complete the ascent: - **Trekking on foot:** Takes 6 to 9 hours depending on your fitness level. - **Pony & Mules:** The most common alternative. - **Palanquin (Palki) / Kandi (Basket):** Ideal for the elderly. - **Helicopter Service:** Available from Phata, Guptkashi, or Sirsi, but must be booked months in advance via the IRCTC portal.

What looks like a sunny morning can turn into a chilling downpour by afternoon. - Waterproof trekking shoes with a good grip. - A sturdy raincoat or poncho. - Thermal wear and a heavy jacket. - Personal first-aid kit and localized pain relievers. - Cash! ATMs are almost nonexistent after Guptkashi.
May Lord Shiva give you the strength for a successful Darshan.
